Explanations in Science
Notes on Explanations in Science. Students complete a worksheet classifying claims as fact, law, or theory.

Logic in Science
Students work in pairs on a murder mystery. Notes on Inductive and Deductive Logic. Students must determine where, in their work on the mystery, they used which kind of logic. Then they must come up with examples in science of how scientists use inductive or deductive logic, and which they think scientists use most often. Note on evidence in science, non-rigidity of process.

Predictions & Hypotheses
Students are guided on how to construct a prediction and a hypothesis and the difference between them through a whole group activity modeling the scientific process, in which students must determine what is on the hidden side of a cube.

Physical & Chemical Properties
Students take notes on the difference between physical and chemical properties, and physical and chemical changes. Small group practice with a challenge problem distinguishing between physical and chemical. They begin the Mystery Powder Lab, in which they practice making predictions and hypotheses, practice distinguishing between physical and chemical properties.

Variables
Students take notes on the three kinds of variables and practice identifying variables by reading brief descriptions of scientific investigations. Students complete the Mystery Powder Lab, in which they design a procedure, based upon their background research, to determine the content of several mystery powders.
